Battery swapping is one such charging solution that takes only a few minutes. EV drivers can visit the battery swapping station to get their depleted battery replaced with a completely charged one.

  • Manual: Batteries are removed and fully charged batteries are placed by hand. It is known as manual battery swapping. These stations occupy minimal space. As battery size is small in some EVs and weight can be lifted by one or two persons, manual battery swapping stations are required for 2-wheelers and 3-wheelers.
  • Autonomous: Autonomous battery swapping stations are semi or fully automated. A robotic arm is used for battery swapping at these stations. As batteries are heavier in 4-wheeler and e-bus, robotic battery swapping is required. Autonomous battery swapping stations are more expensive and require more space.

  • ● There is a lack of standardization among electric vehicle batteries.
  • ● To power the same number of electric vehicles, a larger number of batteries are required.
  • ● Battery lease costs are higher over the life of the vehicle.
  • ● Separate batteries have a higher GST charge which is 18% than batteries sold with an electric vehicle which is 5%.
  • ● As customers want new batteries with a longer range, battery packs have a shorter commercial life.
